SWOT Analysis - Five ways to increase the value

Most of the wire used for the SWOT analysis to determine where they have their own business, and how to proceed. Many of the teams below the senior management team can also use the SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis is an integral part of management at all levels.

A SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) that they did not know the titles represent the four participants brainstormed lists compiled by the team or management team, their current situation. This is a great book to help team members to share different opinions, and helping them to reach a consensus on the strengths and weaknesses of the business and what opportunities and threats ahead. This may be the basis for action.

However, there are warnings and dangers. If you know them, can increase the value of a SWOT analysis.

First, we deal with one of the most subtle. Nobody likes to admit to a weakness. If a weakness in the organization or team is a person, company or an individual leader, they will not be labeled in a SWOT analysis, either directly or indirectly, for having a weakness. And they do not like, they are more likely to defend the situation, or can not think positively about what could be achieved through a global analysis. A lot of a SWOT analysis can help break through this reflection, asking people not so much to think about the weaknesses, but also consider areas to strengthen. Very subtle, but may have an effect.

Second, the SWOT analysis carried out by those present at the time it arrives. Which limits the perspective that may be offered. For example, if a top team make a SWOT analysis can be a bit away from the front line with customers. One way to increase the value of a SWOT analysis is that the senior team to talk to their team may have more contact, on what employees perceive as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the organization before they come together as a group.

Third, a useful indication of the strengths and weaknesses of the company is in customer perception. Some organizations have a special pre-exam review of previous cases. Experience shows that not all.

The fourth, when a SWOT analysis is complete, there is the tacit understanding that the strengths and weaknesses are made in relation to the market today. This is true. However, the value can be increased if analysis is conducted to the enterprise market. Companies are generally intended for granted. This may be a mistake. An objective well written - and the goal here is not your mission statement - drive your business and it is interesting to analyze your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the objective.

Fifth, the focus will be whether you can grasp the future, the strengths and weaknesses are examined in relation to this possibility. Possibility of analysis has arisen, however, the opportunity may present different circumstances and may require the need for a variety of strengths, which can be braked by the weakness of the organization (or areas, to strengthen)

So in short, a value to a SWOT analysis to create an environment to strengthen the company, obtain feedback from staff, get feedback from customers, be sure to check your goal, and against the market and if you decide to do something different then review your strengths and weaknesses.
